THE SMITH FAMILY compiled by Melinda Jones Lukei

By William Micajah Spencer: The name "Smith" is derived from the Saxon word "Smitan" meaning to smite, and early came to be applied to workers in metals of various kinds, such as gold and silver, cooper and iron. The Smiths should be proud of their surnames, for the "Smiter" with his hammer was an important man in his community, not only was he a man of superior physical strength, but also he was a man of superior intelligence, whose ingenuity devised and whose skill fabricated not only ornaments and jewelry for the enjoyment of the people, but also utensils and weapons essential to the life of the community when at peace and to its protection in times of war. From the earliest times, the organized activities of people in every part of the world have required such services as were rendered by the Smith, who of course, in different tribes and nations was known by a different name some word which had an equivalent meaning in the language used. The great importance of the Smith is recorded in the Bible in I Samuel, Chapter 13 verse 9 in the following words "Now there was no smith found throughout the land of Israel for the Philistines said lest the Hebrews make them swords and spears. In other words the Philistines disarmed the Israelites by forbidding them to have smiths. ---- Every Chief and King had his Smith
