Jane Brumley: I really enjoyed looking at the plans of the KI
teacherage. Teachers lived there when I
attended KI Elementary and they were very
much a part of the community and my family
visited with them as they became friends.
I remember it was furnished with very nice
furniture and it had a coal furnace that heated
the whole house.
I felt a certain sadness when it was torn down.
Jimmy Cason: I agree, I too have memories of the teacherage even though it was no longer used by teachers when I was in school. I have always found the architecture of the house intriguing. For some reason the plans don't show the second floor. If I recall, there where 4 bedrooms upstairs, the ceilings of which followed the roof line/rafters. That is something you no longer see is houses for the most part.
Eloise Tucker: I have enjoyed the pictures/plans of the school and teacherage. I also remember the second floor of the teacherage. I spent a lot of time there when Mary and Earnest Smith lived there with their son Charles. The other bedrooms gave them plenty of space when their other chlldren and grandchildren came to visit in the summer. They had grandsons Jesse and Terry that spent a lot of summers there and I became good friends with them.
May 6, 2010. Comment - Jane Brumley: A picture of the teacherage next to KI Elementary School. I remember when we had teachers living there. Who remembers Mr and Mrs Freeman? (Not Gary and Faye Freeman) Believe this picture dates from the 1950's.
May 6, 2010. Comment - Frank Jennings: I remember when Mr Sherry lived there when he was maintenance man for the school.
May 6, 2010. Comment - Keri Beasley Jones: I remember Mr. Sherry also as the bus driver and coming into class if you were having problems following directions. Think he even carried a ruler.
May 6, 2010. Comment - Barbara Snowden: Mr. Knapp built four teacherages. The three on the mainland were two story buildings built alike. The description is in the minutes as to how they should be built. The only one left is the County Office. The description is very detailed down to the fact the Popular Branch Bricks were to have painted mortar but the other two did not.
