MUSIC

Comment - Jane Brumley: Between "Miss Minnie" Jones and Izola Bonney, and Margaret Matthews, I came to appreciate music. Margaret Matthews was our music teacher at Knotts Island Elementary School. Who remembers her? And, our "programs" at Christmas and Spring? We also had other "talent nights" where we performed at KI School.

Comment - Eloise Tucker: Boy, do I remember Mrs Matthews and the music class. I still remember the words to a lot of the songs that we sang. . . songs that no one knows these days. Like the girl who pushed her wheelbarrow, through streets broad and narrow, crying cockles and mussels alive, alive O. Of course the partiotic songs, Battle Hymn of the Republic, the Marine Hymn. I wonder if any of those song books have survived. Mrs Matthews also got us to dance. The waltz (of course), square dancing, the hokey pokey as well as a lot of others. I think Ronnie Wade was usually my partner. Hey, Ronnie want to try dancing with the stars? I was also one of Mrs Matthews piano students. Although not one of her "star" students, I did enjoy it. I had a really hard time with practicing. I was pretty lazy. I remember the things like the Halloween parties at school. We would have a cake walk and Izola Bonney would just burn up the piano keys with one of her songs. I won the cake walk one year, I think that was the year I was dressed as Martha Washington. I probably have a picture of that somewhere. I certainly wish I had more pictures of the school and people. But as it has been said "you didn't waste film". We didn't have the money to waste on anything. But looking back today, it wouldn't have been wasted.
