August 17, 2013. From Brenda McLaughlin. My Mom, Elma
Midgette White, went to elementary school at Corolla School. She
was 6 years old on July 18,1926, but my very protective
Grandmother refused to let her start school until the the fall of
1927. Mom was smart and was quickly moved up to the second grade.
She and a lifetime friend, Mae attended Corolla
school together. The only argument they ever had resulted in a
scuffle. As punishment, the teacher made them memorize Psalm 1.
Mom could quote Psalm 1 the rest of her life.
The teacher lived in the small room behind the
class room. One of her teachers had a mischievous little boy that
was always getting in trouble. When the teacher tried to catch him
to spank him, he would run in the bedroom and hide under their
bed.
They did not have high school in Corolla at
that time, so she stayed with her Grandparents that lived on the
North End of Knotts Island and attended the old Creeds School for
her three years of high school. They only had 11 years of high
school at that time. She graduated in June 1937. There were 12 or
13 graduates in her graduation class. The year they were working
on the causeway to pave it, she and four other students including
Mrs. Izola Bonney boarded with Mr Joe and Mrs Sally Litchfield on
Pocahontas Club Road because the school bus could not travel
through the muddy causeway.
August 18, 2013. From Don Austin. All my Uncles, Aunts and father attended the Corolla school. I went there myself as a 5 year old. It was not legal but I lived across the lane and the teacher was very nice (Mrs.Coward) and she allowed me to attend as long as I was good!! We moved to Poplar Branch when I turned 6 so I could go to school at Dr W. T. Griggs.
