August 10, 2010. Guy "Jack" ANSELL, 62, of Virginia Beach, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1993, in Virginia Beach General Hospital. Mr. ANSELL was born in Knotts Island, N.C. He was the son of the late Benny J. and Marie Smith ANSELL. He was a Baptist and retired from the City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department as a heavy equipment operator. He is survived by his wife, Mildred F. ANSELL; one sister, Madge NEWMAN of Virginia Beach and one brother, Bill ANSELL of Knotts Island. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1993, at 11 a.m. in the Ansell Family Cemetery, Knotts Island, N.C. (The Virginian-Pilot – September 6, 1993)
August 10, 2010. Letha Grimstead ANSELL, 78, died October 3, 1996 in Virginia Beach General Hospital. She was born March 22, 1918 on Knotts Island to the late Charlie and Nellie Bowden GRIMSTEAD. She was the widow of Fred James ANSELL and a member of Knotts Island Methodist Church. She was a homemaker for her family. She is survived by three daughters: Patricia M. ANSELL of Knotts Island, and Nellie A. TWIFORD and Lind M. PALMER, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; one son, Donald Ray ANSELL of Knotts Island; a half-sister, Blanch GRIMSTEAD; 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons: Ronald Lee and William B. ANSELL. A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. in Knotts Island Cemetery with the Rev. August 10, 2010. Willie Jordan ANSELL, 82, of Knotts Island, died Friday night, December 24, 1976, in the Hampton, Va, Veterans Hospital after a long illness. He was a native of Knotts Island , a former deputy sheriff of Currituck County, a farmer and hunting guide and a member of the Knotts Island United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Caleb B. and Mrs. Elizabeth White ANSELL and husband of Mrs. Emily Dough ANSELL of the home. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Elizabeth WHITE and Mrs. Shirley EVANS of Chesapeake, Va.; five sons: W. Jennings ANSELL of Knotts Island, Philip O. ANSELL and Aubrey V. ANSELL of Virginia Beach, the Rev. George C. ANSELL of Nags Head and Keith B. ANSELL of Orlando, Florida; one sister, Mrs. Easter MARTIN of Norfolk, Va.; two brothers: Carlton ANSELL of Norfolk and Lacy ANSELL of Raleigh; 21 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday in the Knotts Island Methodist Church by the Rev. LaMar SENTELL, pastor. Burial followed in the Knotts Island Cemetery. (The Coastland Times – December 30, 1976)

BESSIE JENNINGS ANSELL. Norfolk teacher and historian died April 6, 1957.
Miss Bessie Jennings Ansell, age 60, for many years a Norfolk school teacher and an authority on local and Virginia history died yesterday at 3:20 a.m. at DePaul hospital after a lingering illness. “She was one of the finest and most conscientious teachers in the Norfolk City schools” J.J. Brewbaker, superintendent of the Norfolk public school system, said. “Even during her last illness, she continued working under conditions so adverse that we often wondered how she could endure them.”A native of Princess Anne County, she was born July 6, 1896 on Knotts Island, North Carolina, daughter of the late Leonard Jennings Ansell and Laura Virginia Brumley Ansell. She received her bachelor and master degrees from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. While studying under the late Dr. A.C. Chandler, former president of the college, her interest in Virginia was intensified. In her research, she made use of Dr. Chandler’s bibliography which he gave her before her death.
Returning to Norfolk, she taught at the James Monroe, Robert E. Lee, Lafayette, Willard and Walter H. Taylor Schools. She was on sick leave from the latter at the time of her death. She was to have retired in July at which time she would have completed 40 years service in the Norfolk Schools.
Miss Ansell was a recognized authority on early Norfolk and Virginia history. She gathered material for a set of ten stories for children on Norfolk and Virginia history from original sources, some of which she consulted in England. She also used the court records of Norfolk, Princess Anne and Currituck counties and the Norfolk borough records in her research. “Stimulating Teacher”.
She was responsible for some of the most outstanding contributions toward a history of Norfolk that was widely used in the public school elementary teaching curriculum. “Her deep interest in Virginia and Norfolk permeated a great deal of her work and particularly suited the grades that she taught. She was indeed a strong and stimulating teacher, and will be greatly missed in the Norfolk school system,” Miss Gladys Charlton, director of personnel for the Norfolk city schools, said.
Miss Ansell was a member of Epworth Methodist Church. She is
survived by a sister, Mrs. Virginia Clark; a brother, Leonard Hope
Ansell; two nieces, Carolyn Hope Ansell and Marjorie Leigh Ansell,
and one nephew, Charles Richard Ansell. Funeral services will be
held tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at the H. D. Oliver Funeral Home. The
Rev. Edgar Potts, pastor of Epworth Methodist Church, will
officiate. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

BERTHA MORRIS ANSELL, 92, died Aug. 29, 1991, in a nursing home.
Mrs. ANSELL was born in Knotts Island, N.C. She was a member of
Laurel Avenue Church of Christ and was the widow of Carlton W.
ANSELL. Survivors include three daughters, Louise A. SMITH and
Edna M.CARTER, both of Virginia Beach, and Margaret A. EVERTON of
Norfolk; a son, William R. ANSELL, SR. of Suffolk; 14
grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 14
great-great-grandchildren.

Our Heavenly Father came with open arms on Nov. 21, 2003,
and picked up his child LOUISE EMILY ANSELL SMITH and took her to
her heavenly home. He looked into his "Garden of Life" and saw
that she had fulfilled her life on Earth, and she was tired and
weak. He said, "my faithful child and servant" it is now time for
you to rest and to come home.
Mrs. Smith was born in Knotts Island, N.C., and was the daughter
of the late Carlton W. Ansell and Bertha Morris Ansell. She was
predeceased by her husband, Haywood W. Smith, three grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.
She retired from the Navy Exchange at the Dam Neck Naval Base as a
clerk. She was a member of Charity United Methodist Church since
1946 and the W.W. Dawley Sunday School class.
She is survived by three daughters, Wanda Markus, Janice Silcox
and Joyce Kidd and husband Fred, all of Virginia Beach; a son,
Larry P. Smith Sr. of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret
Everton and Edna Carter, both of Norfolk; a brother, Ryland Ansell
of Chesapeake; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren; and her loving dog, Tequila.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Charity United
Methodist Church by the Rev. William Mahon and the Rev. Walter
Whitehurst. Burial will follow in Charity Cemetery.
