December 12, 2010. KNOTTS ISLAND SCHOOL NEWS from the Picayune February, 1924. Reprinted in the Southern Post March 2, 1983.
Comment - Barbara Snowden: The Picayune was published in Currituck. Paid for by Knapp with a lot of school news. There are copies at the OB Wildlife Education Center. Rupert West took a lot of photos and I believe he was the editor.

A large and appreciative audience enjoyed Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Coogan on Friday, the fifteenth, in “The Kid”. The teachers were delighted with the picture on food. It furnished such an excellent supplement to the hygiene taught in the school. We consider ourselves fortunate in being able to enjoy weekly such excellent pictures through the kindness and generosity of Mr. Knapp.

The county supervisor has visited us twice this month. On her first visit she examined and helped to score mid-year tests, Some of the pupils showed so much improvement that she recommended them for mid-year promotion. On her second visit a number of parents were present. She observed teaching with them in various rooms and then talked to them on “Modern Methods of Teaching”.

We are busy planning ways and means of raising money to pay for equipment recently purchased for our school. We are eager to equip our playground with swings, a giant stride and a bamboo slide. Some of the parents show great interest and promise to help us. Children that play hard, work hard. We want the Knotts Island children to get all the fun out of life that they can while they are children and to learn to be good workers. One of the eighth grade pupils in a recent standardized reading test made a score higher than that made by by the average twelfth grade pupils. We feel proud of him and the fact that all of the Knotts Island pupils scored higher than in test given in the fall.

We were glad to have Miss Albertson of the Greensboro College for Women speak to our Parent Teacher Association on February 14th. Miss Albertson is a fluent and delightful speaker.

December 12, 2010. KNOTTS ISLAND RAFFLE, Southern Post May 5, 1982

With the conclusion of a successful $322.00 raffle of a duck carving donated by Wayne Lewark, the eighth grade class at Knotts Island Elementary School completed their money raising projects for their trip to Washington, DC.

The money from the raffle gave the class a total of $1362.00 for their trip. Other projects they have had this year include dances, bake sales, candle sales, doughnut sales and the selling of cans, newspapers and old batteries.

The students wish to thank the people of Knotts Island for their support and cooperation with all their projects. Without the people's help there would be no trip!

The class will leave Friday morning, May 14, and tour the Pentagon, the Capitol, The Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. Saturday will include a tour of the White House and the Smithsonian Museums. Sunday morning will begin with a tour of the Washington Monument and the students then have a choice of staying at the Smithsonian Museums or visiting National Zoological Park. They will leave Washington at 3 PM and return home around 9 PM.

December 12, 2010. SECOND PLACE, Southern Post May 18, 1983.

Knotts Island Elementary School won second place in District 1 of the “North Carolina School Beautification Program”. The program is sponsored by the Department of Public Instruction in cooperation with “Keep North Carolina Beautiful, Inc.”. It's purpose is to encourage beautification of schools and communities. District 1 consists of fifteen counties in northeastern North Carolina.

The students at Knotts Island, under the leadership of Mrs. Faye L. Freeman, have planted shrubs and flowers and raked pine straw to mulch the flower beds at school. The students maintain the flower beds year around and try to add something new each year.

The award will be presented in a ceremony at Raleigh on May 20, 1983.
