KNOTTS ISLAND CEMETERIES
Compiled by Melinda Lukei
Graveyards 5 thru 14.
Graveyard #5. Cross over the Marsh Causeway, 100 yards on the right before the intersection of Marsh Causeway and Knotts Island Rd (North). This is the Simpson Cemetery
At intersection of Marsh Causeway and Knotts Island Road go to
the left. This is Knotts Island Road. Part of this road is in
Virginia and part in North Carolina.
Graveyard #6 State Road #1255 and Rutter Drive southeast of land that belonged to Norwood Ansell. Right side of house.
Graveyard #7 Waterfield Cemetery on left side of Knotts Island Road on first area that Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge owns.
Graveyard #8. On the right side of Knotts Island Road behind M. E. (Casey) Munden's house at 5065.
Casey Munden said that there was a Indian Cemetery behind this cemetery. Carey Simmons, a slave, was the only slave to have a marker on Knotts Island. The Simmons have been to Casey's house looking for the graveyard. There is supposed to be a slave cemetery in the back of the field here. No one could tell me exactly where it was. This land was the Williams Plantation during the Civil War.
Graveyard #9. Knotts Island Road at Box 6468 Marsh Wood Point behind the house.
Graveyard #10. On the Virginia side of the State Line. Lane at Box 6408, about 2 blocks up lane in large clump of trees on left.
Should be a Craft Cemetery on main road to the right before the locked gate. I didn't find it or any record of it.
Graveyard #11. In front of Raccoon Drive and Knotts Island Road (Highway 615).
Graveyard #12 At the end of Raccoon Drive on the right and north back to the woods.
Graveyard #13. 100 yards south from Raccoon Drive on Highway 615, right side.
Graveyard #14. Knotts Island Road and Woodleigh Road in the edge of the woods. This is supposed to be a slave cemetery and Calvin Jones was the only white person buried there. This was formerly Morrison Williams place. No other stones or markers left.
